The legend of Ip Man,
the martial arts master who taught Hollywood kung-fu
Bruce Lee and Ip Man (Yip Man) share a legendary real-life connection—Ip Man was Bruce Lee’s Wing Chun master!
Bruce Lee & Ip Man’s Relationship
- Ip Man (1893–1972) was a Wing Chun grandmaster from Foshan, China.
- Bruce Lee began training under Ip Man in 1953 in Hong Kong when he was around 13 years old.
- Ip Man taught Bruce Lee Wing Chun, but Bruce later developed his own martial art, Jeet Kune Do.
- Bruce Lee moved to the U.S. in 1959 and expanded beyond Wing Chun, blending different fighting techniques.
Did They Ever Fight?
There’s no record of Bruce Lee and Ip Man fighting, but Bruce deeply respected him.
- In 1970, Bruce Lee reportedly tried to invite Ip Man to a film project in Hong Kong, but Ip Man was in poor health.
- Bruce even sent Ip Man money when he was struggling financially, but Ip Man refused it out of pride.
Ip Man in Pop Culture
- The Ip Man movies, starring Donnie Yen, fictionalized their relationship.
- While the films dramatized their interactions, in real life, Bruce Lee was one of many students of Ip Man.
Bruce Lee stopped studying under Ip Man primarily due to a combination of personal and practical reasons. Relocation: In 1959, Bruce Lee and his family moved to the United States. This relocation made it difficult for him to continue his studies in Wing Chun under Ip Man, who remained in Hong Kong.
Ip Man in the movies defies fighting rules. Like a wing chun master half a boxer's size beating them to a bloody pulp. Bruce Lee doesn't really break any fighting rules considering he just fights people. I would say Donnie Yen's Ip Man beats Bruce Lee any time based on feats of beating much tougher opponents.
Ip Man is arguably the most famous real-life kung fu master to have influenced both martial arts and cinema. A master of Wing Chun, he is best known as the teacher of Bruce Lee. Ip Man's life story was largely popularized through the Ip Man film series (2008-2019), starring Donnie Yen.
