13 ASSASSINS (2010)

If you like the idea of traditional old Samurai films but still feel like you need a few modern comforts and some kickass action in your films (colour being one of them), then 13 Assassins is for you. This movie turned out way better than I expected, and the end is incredibly satisfying.

13 Assassins bears a very close resemblance to Seven Samurai. In this case however, instead of defending a small village, a Samurai is tasked with putting together a team with the goal of killing the man who is next in line to the throne.

13 Assassins (2010) is the greatest action film ever made and that's the bottom line. It's one of the few films that nears perfection. Every character is terrific. The story actually manages to craft a plot and villain that put every other action film to shame.

Retired samurai Shinzaemon (Kôji Yakusho) is contacted to attempt a suicide mission to assassinate Naritsugu. 13 men will face off against over 200. Loosely based on a true story, as well as a 1963 film, Miike's 13 Assassins is not only his most mainstream work to date but a well-crafted, thrilling film.

Naritsugu and Shinzaemon both mortally wound each other. As the lord crawls away in mud crying and experiencing fear and pain for the first time, he thanks Shinzaemon for showing him excitement before Shinzaemon chops his head off.
